Top 5 things to look for at Wimbledon 2019

2019 Wimbledon is in full swing! Here’s the top 5 things to look for.

5. Can Ashleigh Barty consolidate her number 1 ranking?

Nobody in the women’s field has been able to consolidate the women’s number one ranking when given a chance. Osaka fizzled after winning two consecutive slams. Halep wasn’t able to consolidate her ranking either after her 2018 French Open win. She has been lackluster at the slams since. Caroline Wozniacki also has been a non-factor after her Australian Open win in 2018. So, the pressure on Barty is on.

4. Will the upstarts make some noise?

Let’s see if Anisimova, Auger Aliassime, and Zverev can go deep. We’ve seen previous generations of upstarts unable to break through the Old Guard of Federer, Djokovic and Nadal. And on the women’s side, seems like the older more experienced players are cleaning up.

3. What Nick Kyrgios will show up?

Tennis fans keep wishing that Kyrgios makes deep runs at tournaments on a consistent basis. This has not happened though, and we wait and wait. He’s not getting any younger either – he’s now 24 years old. Not an upstart of the tour anymore. He’s slated to meet Nadal in the second round if both win their respective first round matches. Many can remember Kyrgios beating Nadal in the fourth round of Wimbledon 2014.

2. How will the Old Guard fare?

Can Federer continue the dominance on grass? Will Djokovic defend his title? Nadal just won the French, but he hasn’t gone deep at Wimbledon in years. Sure, he made the semis last year, but since 2011, he’s been a fixture at exiting in early rounds.

1.Can Serena still win a Slam?

Since her return from child birth, she has been a top player. No shock there. However, she has not been dominant. She has gone deep in slams but hasn’t been able to close the deal. Will the old Serena finally make an appearance?
