Raducanu’s Long Awaited Comeback – How’s she doing
For almost a whole year, Emma Raducanu has been working to come back from injury.
The last time she played was at the Stuttgart Open in April of 2023. At that tournament, she was crushed by Jelena Ostapenko in the first round 6-2, 6-1. Injuries have plagued the young British star throughout her short career, and especially after her surprise US Open win in 2021 at the tender age of 18. Since then, the expectations and the injuries have worked against the talented Raducanu.
Good for her for finally going under the knife to address some of the issues she had been having. So, now that she seems healthy and fit, what does the future hold for her. After seeing play four-touch matches against quality opponents down under, and especially after the long layoff, I think 2023 will be a banger of a year for Raducanu.
Down under she played both the ASB Classis and the Australian Open. What was especially impressive was her round of 16 match against Elina Svitolina in the round of 16. In this match she showcased her power, grit, determination, fitness, and shot-making, all in the span of two hours against a top player. Raducanu came close to winning this match in straight sets. The final score here was 6-7, 7-6, 6-1. Raducanu ran out of gas in the third set. However, those who watched were treated to one of the best matches we’ve seen from her since 2021.
Although, she did not play as well at the Australian Open, she was still able to reach the second round after disposing of Shelby Rodgers, a quality opponent, in straights. She succumbed to Wang in three hard-fought sets. This is a match she could of easily have won if she was a little more match tough. But the match toughness will come with more tournament play. This is why I’m pegging Raducanu to have another great breakout year. I predict she goes deep at the Slams, and who knows, maybe she nabs another US Open in 2023.
Either way, keep your eye on Emma Radacanu in 2023.
