Race to the WTA Finals

There are just two tournaments left before the women of the WTA head to Fort Worth for the WTA Finals.

This week the women are fighting it out at the San Diego Open with 500 ranking points at stake. Next week, the top women will head for Guadalajara where there will be 1000 points at stake at the Guadalajara Open. That’s 1500 points up for grabs before the WTA Finals.

Other than Iga Swiatek, Ons Jabeur, and Jessica Pegula, who have 3,000 points or more at this stage of the season, most of the top 20 players in the world have between 1800 and 2900 points. That means that any of these top 20 players theoretically have a chance to qualify for the WTA Finals. Let’s look at how the points are broken down between the players.

IGA SWIATEK: 9865
ONS JABEUR: 4555
JESSICA PEGULA: 3232
COCO GAUFF: 2983
CAROLINE GARCIA: 2896
DARIA KASATKINA: 2885
ARYNA SABALENKA: 2871
SIMONA HALEP: 2661
VERONIKA KUDERMETOVA: 2606
MARIA SAKKARI: 2537
BELINDA BENCIC: 2360
PAULA BADOSA: 2264
MADISON KEYS: 2214
ANETT KONTAVEIT: 2093
BEATRIZ HADDAD MAIA: 2050
PETRA KVITOVA: 2038
DANIELLE COLLINS: 1997
EKATERINA ALEXANDROVA: 1910
JELENA OSTAPENKO: 1882
BARBORA KREJCIKOVA: 1849

As one can see, the race for the year-ending top 10 in women’s tennis is far from over. Any of the top 20 players can potentially go on a run in the next couple of weeks and grab a cool 1000 points between the two tournaments. There are only eight spots in the WTA Finals, which means Halep, Sabalenka, Kasatkina, Garcia and Gauff will need to watch their back. They will be looking for some consistent results in the next two weeks. They don’t necessarily need to win out. However, they need to post a few wins to get them over the 3000-point mark to assure themselves a top-eight finish. As for the rest of the field, the pressure is on!
