Moms Are Ruling the WTA Tour

It wasn’t long ago where you would be hard pressed to see moms on the WTA tour.

This is not the case anymore. Top level women are now routinely managing both being a mom and a professional tennis player with great success.

In the 2023 US Open alone, there were 10 moms in the draw. Currently, the most successful moms on tour are Victoria Azarenka, Elina Svitolina, and Caroline Wozniacki.

All three ladies have been staples at the top for a very long time, although both Svitolina and Wozniacki are just stepping back on tour. Time will tell if both Svitolina and Wozniacki will be as successful as Azarenka, who has spent the last five years juggling motherhood with professional tennis, all while playing exceptional tennis, including participating in a US Open final.

Svitolina has had a bit more success in her comeback than Wozniacki thus far, reaching the quarters of the 2023 French Open and the Semis of 2023 Wimbledon. She also won her first tournament at Strasburg. All this quick success has resulted in a current ranking of #25 in the world and rising. It’s a safe bet to assume that Svitolina may be back in the top 10 soon enough. Who knows, maybe a Grand Slam is in her future. She’s playing with hunger, intensity and joyfulness, all key ingredients in Grand Slam success.

Wozniacki’s story is a little bit different. She has been retired since 2020. Although her comeback hasn’t been as fierce as Svitolina’s, she had a strong Round of 16 showing at the 2023 US Open, where she took out number 11 seed Petra Kvitova. In the Round of 16 she would meet future champion Coco Gauff. She would lose in three respectable sets. I expect more solid tennis from Wozniacki.

Joining these moms on tour will be Naomi Osaka, the four-time Grand Slam champion that dominated the tour during her short run. Naomi is shooting for coming back for the 2024 Australian Open. If mom success on the WTA is any indicator, Naomi will be a force to be reckoned with on tour for years to come.
