Federer and Nadal to Play in Blockbuster Semifinal

So much has happened at the French Open in the last few days. Wawrinka and Tsitsipas played what has to be the best match of the tournament, thrilling the crowd for approximately five hours. Serena pissed off Thiem by kicking him out of his press conference, after a shock defeat by Kenin, and crowd favorites Monfils and Del Potro failed to make the quarterfinals.

So, who’s looking good on the men’s side? Well, it’s the top four seeds of course! However, Federer and Nadal are looking quite exceptional. Nadal completely destroyed Nishikori, and Federer took out a resurgent and always strong Wawrinka, whom coincidentally he had lost to four years before in the same round and on the same court.

On the women’s side it’s been a completely different story for the top seeds, unless your name is Simona Halep. Amid all the chaos, Simona has been quietly getting through each round. She struggled a bit in her first two matches. However, the last two have been perfection, losing a total of four games combined. She’ll now play Amanda Anisimova. Anisimova, just 17 years old, has had a break through tournament. However, she has not faced an in form top opponent yet. It will be interesting to see how her game matches up against the experience and fight that Halep brings to the table.

The other break out youngster has been Marketa Vondrousova, the 19-year-old Czech woman will play a resurgent Johanna Konta in the semis. It’s all been “feel good” stories in the women’s side of the draw, but you have to think that Halep smells blood with all the inexperience plaguing the women’s draw. I pick Halep to defend her title given how things have shaped up.

In terms of the men, I just don’t see how Federer can get past Nadal. I pick Nadal and Djokovic in the final with Djokovic beating Nadal in four. However, I’d love to see Federer take it to Nadal in this semifinal for the ages. It would be nice to see Fed get a good win on clay against the reigning champion.
