Australian Open Greats

Australian Open Greats

When one thinks of the greatest Australian Open champion, one’s thoughts immediately go to Novak Djokovic, who will be going for his 10th title down under. Novak’s run at the Australian Open started 15 years ago in 2008. The Australian Open was his first Grand Slam. Who knows? He may already have had the 10th title if it wasn’t for the vaccination debacle in 2022. Regardless, it’s not just Novak who has dominated the Australian Open. Here’s a few other great players to consider in the “Greatest Australian Open Champion” conversation.

Roger Federer: 6 titles

The Australian Open will forever be remembered for the start of Roger’s second act. It was at the Australian Open in 2017 that Roger would come back after a long injury layoff to beat Nadal in the final for his first grand slam in over five years. He would repeat in 2018, bringing his tally to 6 overall titles.

Serena Williams: 6 titles

What can we say about one of the greatest tennis players that ever lived? She absolutely dominated at the Australian Open during her career. So much so, that she even won her last title in 2015 while pregnant with her daughter Olympia!

Andre Agassi: 4 titles

In the beginning of his career Agassi opted out of the Australian Open. He would come to regret it later in life, because his game was tailor made for the sizzling hot climate and sticky courts of the Australian Open. He was absolutely dominant at the tournament between 2000 and 2003.

Roy Emerson: 6 titles

Emerson played before the Open Era, however that doesn’t take anything away from the sheer dominance of having won this title five years in a row.

Martina Navratilova: 3 titles

Martina makes it to this list because not only does she hold the three titles in singles, but she has an astonishing 12 titles in the doubles! She went on to capture her last doubles crown well into her 40s. What a player!

Margaret Court: 11 titles

Although all her titles were before the Open Era, Margaret Court is still the leader in overall titles, even surpassing Novak Djokovic. Is she the greatest champion? You be the judge!
