Argentina Rising

Through the decades, we have witnessed how great Argentinian tennis has been.

From Guillermo Vilas to Gabriela Sabatini and all the way to Juan Martin del Potro, Argentina has always been firmly on the tennis map.

However, in the last few years, it has only been one person carrying the torch for Argentinian tennis. That man has been Diego Schwartzman. That is no longer the case. Because although Diego is struggling to get wins on the ATP as of late, a bunch of his countrymen are picking up the slack.

On the men’s side, Argentina finds itself with three men in the top 30. Led by Francisco Cerundolo at #22, Tomas Etcheverry at #27 and Sebastian Baez at #30. The women have not been as successful as the men, with just one player in the top 100 at #84, Nadia Podoroska.

However, these men are legit and may be a fixture in the top 30 for years to come. Let’s take a look at each of these three men and their rise to the top of the ATP.

Francisco Cerundolo (25) – although 25 years of age, he’s only been on the main ATP tour for three years, spending most of his early years on the futures and challenger circuit where he amassed a total of 16 singles titles. On the ATP tour, he’s won two titles thus far. His best result has been a semifinal appearance at the Miami Open in 2022.

Tomas Etcheverry (24) – Although he has not lifted an ATP tournament crown, Etcheverry made it all the way to the quarterfinals of the French Open in 2023. Standing at a towering 6’5” he is reminiscent of Martin del Potro. Etcheverry is another player that spends significant time at the futures and challenger level, collecting a total of eight titles.

Sebastian Baez (23) – short in stature but not in heart and athleticism, Baez at first may remind you of Diego Schwartzman due to his 5-foot-7 frame. However, that’s where the similarities end. Baez is stronger, stockier, and more aggressive than his countryman. Out of the three Argentinians, he’s also the youngest and most successful, having already won four ATP titles, three of them in 2023. His success in smaller tournaments has not translated at the Grand Slams. It’s only a matter of time though.

As we continue our journey into 2024, look for these three Argentinians to continue making noise on the ATP Tour.
