Laver Cup Predictions 2019

Here we go again folks. We are about to embark on the third edition of the Laver Cup. What was initially talked about as simply an exhibition from fans and journalists has actually become a legitimate competition, with high ratings, exceptional displays of shot making and spirited encounters. This year as in the last two, we’ll see many of the same faces for both Team Europe and Team World. Team Europe, the twice defending champion, will once again come to the Laver Cup stacked with top ten talent, with Federer and Nadal leading the charge, and Thiem, Zverev, Tsitsipas and Fognini rounding out their team. That’s six players that are in the top 11 in the world.

Team world will come with decent roster, but nobody in the top 20. That’s not to say Team World does not have a chance. Isner, Raonic, Kyrgios, Fritz, Shapovalov and Jack Sock are arguably top tier talent and can beat anyone on the Team Europe roster on a good day. The two players that can inflict the most damage would be Isner, Raonic, Kyrgios. All three have had some level of success against Nadal and Federer. They will need some success in the singles if they want to win, especially given the fact that Team World has shown to dominate in doubles. In the past two editions, it has been the doubles that has kept Team World in the competition.

Expect to see more of the same this year, with Team World taking the doubles matches while team Europe cleans up on the singles. That being said, age and fatigue can be a factor for Team Europe. It’s been a long year for the likes of Nadal and Federer, the two best players on that roster. Youthful energy from Kyrgios and team could get the job done.

Prediction:

Team World wins competition in the final match where Kyrgios and Federer once again go for the crown, much like 2017.
