French Open 2020 – Women’s Draw Best Potential matchups

The 2020 French Open Draw is out, and we’ve got some exciting potential matchups in the first week as well as deep into the tournament. Here’s four matchups to look for in the next two weeks.

Round of 16: Marketa Vondrousova (15) vs. Simona Halep (1)

Vondrousova is quickly becoming a force to be reckoned with on clay. She was a finalist at the French Open last year and made the semis of the Italian Open this year. She can complicate things for Halep as she seeks her second French Open. Look for a very cerebral match, full of athleticism and long rallies.

Round of 16: Elina Svitolina (3) vs. Annett Konteveit (17)

Elina is arguably the second-best clay court player in the world, behind Simona Halep. Having just won a title at Strasburg this week should be a confidence builder as she heads to the French Open. Unlucky for her, she’ll need to face Kontaveit if she wants to advance into the second week. Kontaveit is a tricky and talented player, who has been playing some world class tennis since the restart of the tour. Konteveit is a shot maker, while Svitolina relies on her defensive prowess and athleticism. Expect some highlight reel points on this one.

Round of 16: Williams (6) vs. Azarenka (10)

A rematch of the US Open semis in the round of 16. These two hard hitting veterans will fight it out for a shot at the quarterfinals. Williams will come out swinging as usual, while Azarenka will try and weather the storm and move Williams around for three sets. It will be a tough proposition for Williams, as movement will be an issue, especially on the slow clay courts of Roland Garros.

Semifinal: Petra Kvitova (7) vs. Garbine Muguruza (11)

Muguruza has a real shot at going deep in this tournament. Let’s not forget she’s a past champion and had a strong showing at the Italian Open. Petra is always a threat, no matter where she plays. Left handers are always tricky, and Petra is no exception. With her deep and strong groundstrokes, she can catch Muguruza flat footed. So, look out!
