Frances Tiafoe Is Finally Putting It Together
I’ve watched enough Frances Tiafoe matches to understand that this was not an ordinary US Open for him. Although he was beaten in four entertaining sets by Felix Auger-Aliassime, Frances showed maturity, focus, and resolve. It wasn’t just in this match where he showed these qualities though. He has been ultra-focused in not letting his head get the best of him during the summer and throughout his four matches at the US Open.
His win against top 10 player and number five seed Andrey Rublev was the signature win he had been working so hard to achieve at his home tournament. With the help of coach Wayne Ferreira, you can tell he’s committed to making the move from entertaining the top 50 players to the utmost professional top 20 players.
I expect a lot of great things from Tiafoe in the next few years. Now that Frances has found the missing pieces to his game, he’ll now be able to give himself a great chance to win big titles. Could a Grand Slam be on the horizon? He’s definitely talented enough to go deep at a Grand Slam. With a little more work on the strategic side of the game, I could see him winning the US Open. Especially given how much support he’ll continue to receive in New York for years to come.
Either way, when Frances goes home for a quick rest before the European indoor swing, he’ll probably reflect on what a wonderful summer he had. The win against Rublev at the US Open was definitely a signature one for him. However, let’s not forget the other big-time wins he had this summer. At the Canadian Open, he beat hometown favorite and the number 10 ranked player in the world, Dennis Shapovalov.
He also beat the former number one Andy Murray at the Winston Salem Open. Andy Murray as he has shown is starting to look like the Andy Murray of old, so that’s a great win on his resume. Finally, let’s also not forget how his summer started. At Wimbledon, he took out the number three seed and French Open finalist Stefanos Tsitsipas. So, I suggest you keep an eye on Frances. He’ll be playing and winning lots of matches in the near future.
