Exhibition Tennis in May

Looks like we’re going to go from virtual tennis to actual exhibition tennis the whole month of May. This is good news for tennis fans, and although this doesn’t come close to making up for the loss of the French Open and Wimbledon, it’s something.

The bad news is that most players participating are not the superstars we’re used to headlining major tournaments. Does it matter though? In my book, if you’re in the top 100, I’ll be watching. Especially now! So, what are the best exhibitions, where are the televised and who’s playing?

All these exhibitions are being televised on the Tennis Channel. Germany held the first exhibition this past weekend, with the biggest name being Dustin Brown, the 35-year-old German journeyman who is best known for upsetting beating Rafa Nadal at the second round of Wimbledon in 2015. Although this first exhibition wasn’t all that appetizing, the next two that are coming up should be a little more interesting.

From May 8-10, Matteo Berrettini (8), Reilly Opelka(39), Tennys Sandgren (55), and Tommy Paul (57) will actually play a round robin format for prize money. Details are still coming out, but this one seems a lot more interesting. Opelka and Paul are great up and coming American talent, while Berrettini has been playing top 10 tennis for almost a year now. These guys are also big aggressive and strong. Looking forward to these guys getting on the court in Florida.

In my view, the most interesting exhibition is probably Alison Riske (19), Amanda Anisimova (28), Danielle Collins (51) and Ajla Tomljanovic (56) playing another round robin format From May 22-24. I think it’s more interesting because I believe these ladies are more evenly matched and include American talent that has been posting better results than the American men playing in Florida.

Alison Riske posted some great results in 2019 to get herself into the top 20 last year, reaching the Quarters of Wimbledon upsetting Ash Barty along the way. Anisimova had a coming out party last year, as did Danielle Collins. Anisimova reached the semis of the French Open in 2019, while Collins reached the semis of the Australian in 2019. These American ladies have been going deep into tournaments, and we were all expecting great results from them this season.
