Can Emma Raducanu Get Back to the Top
Raducanu captured the tennis world’s heart last year when she won the US Open as an 18-year-old qualifier. Since then she has struggled on the WTA tour. Ranked as high as 10th in the world as recently as July 2022, the fact that she lost in the first round of the US Open meant that she would lose those 2000 ranking points and drop out of the top 50.
She now finds herself as the 70th ranked player in the world, and with no signs of getting back to the top of the tennis world. It doesn’t help that she’s also gone through four coaches in 15 months. Most recently, Dimintry Tursunov departed as her coach. This points to a little bit of chaos in that camp. You would think they would be looking for stability, especially with such dismal results in the last year.
On a positive note, she has begun working with Andy Murray’s physical trainer, Jez Green. Fitness seems to be part of the uneven results in the last year. Lately, Raducanu has suffered some sort of injury every other month. Maybe if she gets 100% healthy she can start climbing the rankings again. Don’t hold your breath though, the WTA tour is full of talent, and even breaking the top 50 seems like a difficult proposition.
In position 30-50 you have players like Bianca Andreescu (46), Naomi Osaka (43), and Sloane Stephens (37) to name a few. Those three ladies are former Grand Slam champions looking to climb back to the top 10 – just like Raducanu. If these talented ladies are having a tough time getting their rankings up, how likely is it that Raducanu can get herself back in that position as well?
Right now, I imagine that the Raducanu camp has two priorities in mind, get her fit, and get a stable coach. If she can somehow get those two pieces in place, she may have shot. She does have the talent, and the fans do love her. Let’s see how she fares in 2023. It will be a new year, without too much expectation.
