Australian Open 2022 – First Week Recap
What a great week of tennis at the Australian Open. The crowds have been fantastic and the play superb. We’ve had some big upsets as usual, including tournament favorites. So, what are the main storylines?
Kyrgios looked fantastic in his first-round win and second round loss to Medvedev. It is obvious that Nick has put in the work in the last five months. He looked sharp, served extremely well in both matches and was both mentally and physically ready. He was as entertaining as everyone expected him to be, and considering he was very competitive in his match against the best player in the world right now, Medvedev, 2022 looks very bright for Nick. Hopefully he plays a full schedule because tennis really needs him.
Amanda Anisimova is playing out of her mind. She’s been working with Darren Cahill, Halep and Agassi’s former coach, and the work has begun paying off. She captured a title before the Australian Open and this week she took out the tournament favorite and defending champ, Naomi Osaka in three sets. Barty will need to be careful against Anisimova, who is hitting the ball as cleanly and powerfully as anyone. If she takes out Barty, she will become the tournament favorite.
Nadal is quietly tearing through the draw. At the beginning of the tournament, nobody really thought Nadal had a chance. After all, he has been away from the sport for a good six months recovering from injury. However, he is quietly making his way through the draw. Zverev, our tournament favorite, looms in the quarters. If Nadal can somehow get through Zverev, he’s got a real shot at the title here.
Gael Monfils is looking like a world beater. It’s been three rounds and three straight sets win for the French veteran at the Australian Open this year. Gael is looking like a sure bet to meet Matteo Berrettini in the quarters. This should be another epic match between these two. As many can recall these two disputed the quarters of the 2019 US Open. They gave us a five-set thriller on that hot New York day.
The second week looks to provide us with additional excitement. Look for Medvedev, Zverev, and Monfils in the Semis. On the women’s side, I’m going to go out on a limb and predict Anisimova continuing to stun her opponents.
