Recap of Week One US Open 2022

It was an exciting first week of tennis at the US Open! There were enough storylines to fill a tennis fan’s dreams for months. As we head into the second week of the year’s final Grand Slam, here’s a brief recap of what we saw.

Nick Kyrgios continues his brilliant summer. He dismantled defending champion and number one seed Daniil Medvedev in four sets. He’s now the odds-on favorite to win this tournament. Lucky for him, he won’t have anyone named Nadal or Djokovic to contend with to take the title. As an added bonus, he’ll have all of New York behind him, no matter who he plays.

Serena Williams bowed out of tennis after nearly a quarter of a century of playing at the highest level and bringing home 23 Grand Slams. Fans will miss her. Her opponents won’t. In the last few years of her career, she was unable to win that elusive 24th Grand Slam title. However, she’ll always be the greatest in our hearts. The chase for 24 Grand Slam titles to beat Margaret Court’s record will need to continue.

Frances Tiafoe may have done one better than Kyrgios by beating number two seed and 22 Grand Slam champion Rafa Nadal. It’s been a long time coming for Frances who has been on the cusp of doing something great for quite some time now. On Monday night, he achieved it. He will now feel the pressure to follow this massive win by attempting to take out Andrey Rublev in the quarters. The way Frances is playing, and with the crowd behind him, this is totally doable.

Iga Swiatek, the number one seed, and odds-on favorite on the women’s side has quietly ripped through the draw and finds herself in the quarter despite a drop-in form this summer. She now becomes the overwhelming favorite to lift her second Grand Slam title of the year.

Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula are having a fantastic year. Whereas Coco Gauff has a good shot at making her second Grand Slam final, Jessica Pegula has to contend with Swiatek in the quarters. Should Pegula come through, there is a legitimate chance that we will see two Americans fight it out in the final.

Coming into the final weekend, we’ll see a new US Open Champion in both the men’s and women’s draw. Don’t miss out a single beat. For those of you having guests over to watch the matches, here’s some fun tennis ball coasters! To crack open some beers here’s some retro tennis handle bottle openers.
