Camila Giorgi and Matteo Berrettini are Currently Leading an Amazing Italian Resurgence in Tennis

Camila Giorgi and Matteo Berrettini are currently leading an amazing Italian resurgence in tennis. On the men’s side we’re seeing youngsters like Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti shaking up the ATP. On the women’s side it had been a bit quieter until Camila Giorgi’s years of hard work finally paid off at the Canadian Open.

That is the most important tournament an Italian woman has won since the 2015 US Open that Flavia Pennetta won. Let’s also not forget that Pennetta is married to the mercurial Italian tennis veteran Fabio Fognini. For a long time, it was just Fognini carrying the torch for Italian tennis. Not anymore. With players both on the men’s and women’s side capable of winning big-time tournaments, expect a continuous influx of talented Italian players in the years to come.

How good are all these players though, and do they have what it takes to win a Grand Slam? Let’s look at how each is developing.

Let’s start with Camila Giorgi. She’s a veteran at 29 years of age. However, she could be a little bit of a female Wawrinka. Wawrinka, like Giorgi would post solid but inconsistent results early on. However, he was a heavy hitter just like Giorgi, and would literally blow people off the court in short bursts. Once Wawrinka figured out how to harness that power and get some focus and consistency, the rest was history. One gets the feeling that the best is yet to come for Giorgi. I can see more masters-level wins, but not a Grand Slam

Matteo Berrettini is at the very top of the Italian tennis food chain. Already a Wimbledon finalist and a staple in the top 10, Matteo has a first strike tennis mentality that is not typical of Italian tennis. Italians have tended to be grinders. However, with Matteo’s height and power, why wouldn’t you go all out? It has obviously worked so far for Matteo. Great things seem to be on the horizon for the Italian. A Grand Slam is in the cards.

Finally, there are two amazing youngsters in Sinner and Musetti. Sinner has had the better results, but Musetti has come out of nowhere to challenge the very best in the world. He’s already posted wins against the likes of Goffin, Auger-Alliasime, and Schwartzman. Much like his more experienced compatriot, the sky is the limit for this talented Italian. Both can win a Grand Slam someday.
