US Open 2020 Men’s Quarterfinals Predictions

The men’s Quarterfinals are set. We have some exciting matchups ready to tee off on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Here’s a breakdown of the matches and my predictions.

Coric (27) vs. Zverev (5)

A few years ago, this matchup would have been considered the battle for NextGen dominance. Coric and Zverev where the top youngsters back then, and people expected both to be in the top 10 by 2020. Zverev fulfilled the top 10 promise, whereas Coric has faltered. Much of it has had to do with a combination of injuries and the frustration from all the stop and go at the tour level. His body is healthy now, and after a crazy win over Tsitsipas, where he saved six match points, one has to believe that this is his time. My pick: Coric in four hard fought sets

Carreño Busta (20) vs. Shapovalov (12)

It’s difficult to ascertain Busta’s form, especially given the fact the played some relatively unknown players in his first three rounds of the tournament. We finally had a chance to see how he would match up against someone like Djokovic, the tournament favorite, but he got defaulted in the first set. On the other hand, Shapovalov has been building a great resume at this year’s US Open, coming back from behind to beat Taylor Fritz (19) in five drama filled sets and then easily handling David Goffin (7). The stars seem to be aligning for these youngsters, and it may be no different in this matchup. My pick: Shapovalov in four sets.

Rublev (10) vs. Medvedev (3)

It’s unfortunate to see these two great Russian players against each other in the quarters. They should be disputing the semifinal or the final at this year’s US Open. They are both playing that well. Unfortunately for Rublev, I think Medvedev has reached the same level of rhythm as he had in his run last year. He will not miss a shot. There is no humanly way to get the ball past him or make him miss. It will be a hard-fought contest for about one set and a half, and then Medvedev will establish his dominance. My pick: Medvedev in four.

De Minaur (21) vs. Thiem (2)

It would have been nice to see Kyrgios in this US Open. Instead we get the second-best thing to come out of Australian since Kyrgios. De Minaur is an exciting player to watch. He’s not the overpowering type, he’s the “I’ll run everything down” type. He’s tough as nails. Unfortunately for him, He’s about to run into the Dominic Thiem steam train. You somehow get the sense that Dominic Thiem is as close to that first Grand Slam as he has ever been. This may very well be his moment. Now that Djokovic is out of the tournament, it seems that Thiem is on a collision course with Medvedev. My pick: Thiem in three.
