A few weeks back I wrote about how Serena is a tennis super hero. In part because of the amazing outfit she wore at the French Open, but mostly because she’s unbeatable when she’s in the zone. And has been unbeatable for almost two full decades. Recently, she’s also been a super hero mom to all moms out there, as she balances her comeback with raising her daughter.

I commend her for raising awareness about the difficulties of balancing a career and motherhood. She’s almost becoming a sort of spokesperson for moms everywhere. Well done Serena! As she heads into the US Open, I can’t help but think back to Kim Clijsters, who won two consecutive US Opens after giving birth to her daughter. This was also after a two-year retirement from tennis. She came back in 2009 after giving birth to her daughter in February 2008 and was outstanding winning the 2009 and 2010 US Open.

What’s also so commendable about Kim’s comeback was that she returned to the WTA just a month before winning the US Open in 2009. She was unranked and unseeded. That is some comeback. She was also the first mother to win a Grand Slam since Evonne Goolagong won Wimbledon in 1980, and the first mother to win the US Open since Margaret Court in 1973. Will history repeat itself at the US Open when Serena takes the court this September? I think Kim Clijsters should attend to cheer another tennis mom on. In addition, I think Kim should present the winner’s trophy if Serena wins – from one mom to the other.

This tennis summer seems to be all about learning the balance between motherhood and professional tennis for Serena. I wouldn’t bet on Serena not figuring this out. Once she does, and I wouldn’t be surprised if she figures it out by September, look out ladies. She’ll be coming for you again, and potentially raising that US Open trophy.
