2023 French Open Men’s Recap

Make that 23 Grand Slams for Novak Djokovic. He’s now tied with Serena Williams and one away from Margaret Court.

I think it’s safe to say that Novak is not done just yet. Here’s a guy, who at 36 years of age, seems to be at the very top of his game, dismantling the very best of the ATP in comfortable fashion every time a Grand Slam rolls around.

It’s been a fantastic start of the year for Novak, first capturing the Australian Open in dominating fashion, and now doing the very same thing at the French Open. He’ll go into the grass court swing as a heavy favorite to win Wimbledon.

What’s even more impressive is that the only two tournaments that Novak has won this year have been Grand Slams. His clay court preparation was hardly a success, losing routinely in the early rounds of most of the tournaments he entered before the French Open. Novak just has a knack of getting in the right mindset once he arrives at a Grand Slam. Previous results at smaller tournaments are no indication of his level.

Given the fact that Nadal is injured for the foreseeable future, and Federer is now retired, who can challenge Novak? At the moment, it looks like nobody can challenge him. Freed from the Covid vaccine restrictions, he’ll enter every Grand Slam for the next couple of years as a heavy favorite.

It’s not all about Djokovic though. Props needs to go out to Casper Ruud, who was not having a great season until he turned up the heat at the French Open, reaching his second French Open final in a row. At just 24 years of age, it feels as though Casper is about to break through and win a Grand Slam very soon. This was his third Grand Slam final, having reached both the 2022 French Open and the 2022 US Open finals.

As for the highly billed encounter between Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, aside from the spectacular first two sets, the remaining two were a breeze for Djokovic as Alcaraz came down with cramps and was not able to give his 100%.
Onto Wimbledon!
