Top 5 Things To Be Excited About in Tennis in 2022
We are ready for the 2022 tennis season. Here’s five things that should get us excited about watching some tennis in 2022.
5. The old timers making runs at tournaments.
Roger Federer and Serena Williams should be making their respective comebacks sometime in 2022. By this time, they will both be 40 years old and with nothing to prove. However, on a good day, they can beat anybody and especially on a fast court like Wimbledon. Big runs at Wimbledon or the US Open would be great to see.
4. Medvedev, Zverev and Tsitsipas continued success.
The tide has finally turned in favor of the powerful young guns. Medvedev, Zverev, and Tsitsipas are now routinely winning big titles and with Rafa, Roger and Djokovic at the latter ends of their careers and prone to injury, it is very likely that a couple of the Grand Slams in 2022 will go to these youngsters. That will be great for tennis.
3. The new generation
In both women’s and men’s tennis, there’s some great talent rising in the rankings. It will be fun to see how Leylah Fernandez, Emma Raducanu, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz navigate the season. There’s lots of expectations on them for 2022. Will the rise to the occasion or fade away into mediocrity?
2. The return of Naomi Osaka
There’s a huge vacuum in women’s tennis right now. Much of it has to do with the fact that in 2021 the best player in the world, Osaka, did not play a full schedule. If Osaka returns to full strength in 2022, she’ll dominate the women’s tour. Osaka is capable of a calendar year Grand Slam, that’ how good she is. My prediction is that she’ll pick up at least one Grand Slam title in 2022.
1. Full capacity crowds at every event.
Towards the second half of the tennis season in 2021 it was great to see the crowds back in the stadiums. 2022 should continue to bring back the crowds. There’s nothing like seeing excited and enthusiastic crowds watching the players bring out their best. Here’s to a healthy 2022!
